Teak Research was tasked with helping a client, an exporter of rice to Western markets, better understand the Thai consumer landscape as they sought to grow in this smaller but important market. The client aimed to explore local attitudes not only toward organic rice but also a broader range of health-focused food products. Gaining cultural insights into Thai consumers’ values and behaviors was central to this project.
Our research involved culturally grounded conversations with Thai consumers, focusing on their views on health, authenticity, and food safety. We found that cultural factors significantly shaped consumer choices. For many, "healthy eating" is intertwined with traditional Thai beliefs about food as medicine. While consumers valued organic and natural products, they were often skeptical of certification processes. This tension between modern health trends and traditional beliefs became a key insight. To help the client navigate this, we conducted an ideation session to translate these cultural insights into practical strategies for product development and positioning.
The result was a set of recommendations integrating cultural insights with market opportunities. We advised on product concepts that aligned with Thai consumers' health priorities and respect for tradition, while addressing concerns about transparency and authenticity.
